Thanks, Kathia. That means nothing to me :) Totally kidding!! That is a very sweet thing to say. I re-read that post and yeah, that is definitely what I was thinking at the time. Now that I've had my "Waaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!" moment, though, I am kind of ok with it. Who knows, it might happen again some time in the future and I'll be able to deal with it sans self-flagellation, wailing and gnashing of teeth :)

Don't be too upset by it (although I'm sure you've heard this to death).

People treat ambivalence differently. Some block them from getting feeds, some ignore them, some unfriend them.

There are many reasons why people unfriend someone.

For someone with 200-400 friends, sometimes it gets tough to be able to post and air their views without the risk of attracting nasties.

After all, if one could find 400 friends who were either ambivalent about their views or more amazingly, like them, they'd be a fledgling politician.

I've contemplated cutting down my friends list. But I fear some people may not understand my motivations. It's nothing personal, I am just trying to reclaim my personal space and may want to omit the conservatives in my FB just so I won't see the backlash when I go on a manic liberal tirades.

However, since that's not going to work, I've just abandoned my FB mostly and moved to twitter. Friends that matter go on twitter and I've made it private too. There's enough of me out in cyberspace, I'm really beginning to crave that privacy right about now

Don't feel too enraged, we love you and read you. That matters I hope. :)

Hey Ollie! Yeah, I am pretty anti-Charity, now. Especially after this most recent trip. I like to think of how people can be helped to help themselves and of course school is such a big part of that. Apparently there are some children's homes doing really great things with limited resources. Kids like Albert need to get into those homes and I think that those homes, if they can, should engage what teachers they can to then teach the kids. It needs a lot more research, though. And I've run out of time :(

Iris. Earlier this year I heard about a programme on BBC about Zimbabwe's orphans but I have not been able to watch it. This blog highlights the problems facing children in Africa, particularly Zimbabwe. I considered sending a donation to Children's Village or SOS but was very skeptical of what was going to happen with the money. It really breaks my heart that kids don't have access to education (a basic human right). I couldn't read the rest of your response to D.C.'s reply to your blog but being that you were just home do you think there's a way to help children like Albert? I'm going to try and watch the documentary.

That is definitely one of the socially conscious things to do, DC. But I have zero faith in charity in Zimbabwe, or probably Africa in general. you give to a local charity, some opportunistic administrator uses it the money to remodel his kitchen.
If kids like Albert are the real deal, then they definitely need help, but not handouts. I wonder what the alternatives to charity are. There must be some...

In Hamburg there are terribly mutilated people begging in the streets, too. I generally don't read their letters and I don't give anything. But with a bad consciousness.

I think in the "good" street places here they are all organized people - or simply chased away. Like the sex workers in the streets here: there are no independents. I know that because there is the occasional war between pimps.

Perhaps if one would give structural aid to organisations or schools that are trustworthy?
